Is filling out false domain information illegal?

I registered a domain with godaddy.com and filled out whois information (registration info) as the info for my school. Now they are mad about it and are threatening legal punishment such as me being arrested.

Is entering false domain registrant information in fact illegal? or is it just against godaddy’s terms of service.
