On October 15th. 2007 the top domain name registries including the .COM registry will be increasing the price of domain names by about 7%.
This is the price charged to domain name registrars who then decide how much of this they will pass on to their resellers and to consumers.
For example, the Verisign registry – responsible for all .COM and .NET domain names – will be increasing their fees from $6.00 to $6.42 per year for all .COM domain names and .NET names will go up from $3.50 to $3.85. This is apparently the first registry fee increase for .com and .net domains since 1999.
These price increases will obviously put pressure on domain registrars – from whom you and I buy our domain names – to follow suite. But competition will make them hesitate and it’s not yet clear how much the market will move.
My tip is if you are thinking of buying some domains anyway, then buy now. Some of the lowest prices around are from domain name resellers 1stDomainNameServices.net, DomainsNow4U.com and CheapToRegister.com.
