Are Domain Names With Hyphens Penalized? µµ¸ÞÀÎ À̸§Àº ÇÏÀÌÇÂÀ¸·Î ºÒÀÌÀÍÀ»?

A hot debate in online SEO (= Search Engine Optimization) forums is whether domain names like, say, low-cost-web-site-hosting.com are deliberately being ranked lower by Google, MSN, Yahoo, and other search engines compared to the same name without hyphens, like: lowcostwebsitehosting.com. ¶ß°Å¿î ³í¶õ¿¡¼ ¿Â¶óÀÎ ¼ÀçÀÀ (= °Ë»ö ¿£Áø ÃÖÀûÈ) Æ÷·³Àº °°Àº µµ¸ÞÀÎ À̸§À» ¿©ºÎ¸¦, ¿¹¸¦ µé¸é, ³·Àº - ºñ¿ë - À¥ - »çÀÌÆ® - hosting.comÀÌ ³·ÀºÇÏ¿© °íÀÇÀûÀ¸·Î ¼øÀ§°¡ °áÁ¤µÇ´Â ±¸±Û, MSN Ä£±¸, ¾ßÈÄ, ±×¸®°í ´Ù¸¥ °Ë»ö ¿£Áø¿¡ ºñÇØ µ¿ÀÏÇÑ À̸§À»ÇÏÁö ¾Ê°í ÇÏÀÌÇÂ, ´À³¦ : lowcostwebsitehosting.comÇÕ´Ï´Ù.

Google's engineer, Matt Cutts , is saying "No". ±¸±ÛÀÇ ¿£Áö´Ï¾î, ¸ÅÆ® cuttsÀÌ ¸»ÇÏ´Â "¾Æ´Ï¿À". But it seems what he actually said was: "We don't use hyphens as a spam signal." ±×·¯³ª ±×´Â ½ÇÁ¦·Î ¸»ÇÑ °ÍÀº ¹«¾ù °Í : "¿ì¸®´Â ½ºÆÔ ¸ÞÀÏÀ» »ç¿ëÇÏÁö ¾Ê´Â ÇÏÀÌÇ ½ÅÈ£¸¦ÇÕ´Ï´Ù."

Is that the same as saying "No"? ÀÌ °°Àº ¸»Çϰí "¾Æ´Ï¿À"? I think he's side-stepping the question: "Do hyphenated domains get penalised?". »çÀ̵å - ½ºÅÜÀ» °Í °°¾Æ Áú¹® : "ÇÏÁö º¹ÇÕ µµ¸ÞÀÎÀ» get penalised?"ÇÕ´Ï´Ù. And as Google keeps its ranking formula a closely guarded secret, it's not surprising he's not giving a precise answer. ±¸±ÛÀÇ ¼øÀ§ °áÁ¤ ¹æ½Ä°ú ±ä¹ÐÈ÷ÀÇ ºñ¹ÐÀ» À¯Áö, ±×·¸Áö ¾Ê¾Æ Á¤È®ÇÑ ´äº¯À»ÁÖÁö ¾ÊÀ» ³î¶ó¿î ±×´ÂÇÕ´Ï´Ù.

The fact is that there are any number of reasons why search engine ranking will rise or fall, and most reasons have nothing to do with whether the web site is spammy or not. Observations suggest that hyphenated domains are not getting booted out of Google. Á¦¾ÈÇÏ´Â °üÃø ºÎÆà ¹ÛÀÇ º¹ÇÕ µµ¸ÞÀÎÀº ±¸±Û ¸ø ¹Þ°íÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù. Page Rank is maintained, so there is no obvious spam penalty. ÆäÀÌÁö ¼øÀ§´Â À¯Áö °ü¸®, ±×·¡¼ ¸í¹éÇÑ ½ºÆÔ ¸ÞÀÏ À§¾à±ÝÀ̾ø½À´Ï´Ù. But... ÇÏÁö¸¸ ... there do appear to be fewer and fewer domains with hyphens ranking in Google's top 10 for popular searches. ´õ ÀûÀº°ú ´õ ÀûÀº¿¡ ÇØ´çÇÏÁö µµ¸ÞÀο¡ÀÖ´Â °Í °°½À´Ï´Ù ÇÏÀÌÇÂÀÌ Àα⠰˻ö¾î ¼øÀ§¿¡ ´ëÇÑ ±¸±ÛÀÇ »óÀ§ 10 °³ÇÕ´Ï´Ù.

So... ±×·¡¼ ... if you want your site to rank well in the search engines, my advice would be to register a domain WITHOUT hyphens if you possibly can. ±ÍÇÏÀÇ »çÀÌÆ®¸¦ ¿øÇÑ´Ù¸é ¼øÀ§ À½¿¡ÀÖ´Â °Ë»ö ¿£Áø, ³» Ãæ°í´ÂÀÌ µµ¸ÞÀο¡ µî·ÏÀ»ÇÏÁö ¾Ê°í ÇÏÀÌÇÂÀÌ ¾î¼¸é ÇÒ ¼öÀÖ´Â °æ¿ì.

And don't worry too much if your domain doesn't include your site's main keywords. ±×¸®°í °ÆÁ¤ÇÏÁö ¸¶ ±ÍÇÏÀÇ µµ¸ÞÀο¡ ³Ê¹« ¸¹Àº °æ¿ì ±ÍÇÏÀÇ »çÀÌÆ®ÀÇ ÁÖ¿ä Ű¿öµå°¡ Æ÷ÇÔµÇÁö ¾Ê½À´Ï´Ù. A short, catchy domain name will likely be just as successful. ªÀº, catchy µµ¸ÞÀÎ À̸§Àº ¼º°øÀûÀÎ °Íó·³ º¸ÀδÙ.
